There’s nothing like rowing on the quiet water that mid august brings to Averill.
Month: August 2011
Early August
Spectacular summer weather made last week a wonderful one to visit Averill. The highlight of our visit was seeing a bald eagle on the lake for the first time, swooping down to capture fish and perching on the high Balsam Firs along the south edge of the lake.
Hiking on the Ridge Trails is always great for seeing lichens and mosses. Above is the brown rock tripe that provides a beautiful purple dye for dying wool and cloth.
Typical of this time of the year are lots of ripening fruits. The roadside apple trees are filled with fruit and the blueberry bushes (lowbush blueberry) also were loaded with fruit.
Fireweed is in bloom along the roadsides with its beautiful pink flowers and seed pods.
The lake level is down this year, perhaps due to the warm and relatively dry weather. We saw six loons together on the lake this past week and there were two hanging around very close to the dock.
